Do Kids Need a Summer Vacation?
by ms_ann_c

The tone of the article seems to suggest that all of the U.S. gives summer off to school-age children.

In Las Vegas, NV, many of the Clark County School District schools are considered 'year-round'. They are put on rotating schedules to have weeks off at different times of the year.

This can be a disaster for the parent that has children in different grades and on different schedules.

I have heard that some parents would welcome the traditional break during the year just so that they could plan ahead financially for vacations, child care, etceteras. Not to mention, seemingly vandalism is on the rise concurrently with the rotations due to juveniles being bored.

What is the percentage of year-round schools in the U.S.?

This is about the time kids are starting to get bored. Mine are. I think the school week should be shortened to maybe a 4 day week and the school year should be extended a month or so. Kids seem to be more rested when they have a 3 day weekend. I think 2 months off of school is enough of a break.

If your kids are bored, give them something to do. Maybe summer could actually be used for people to spend time with their children. Teach them one of your hobbies, give them a place to volunteer, etc. Just because parents aren't professional teachers, doesn't mean they can't teach.
