May I suggest reading the book Dominion. It very intelligently presents the connection between religion and meat-eating. While I do not know where in the bible it says we should eat living (once living, i guess) creatures, I do know (from this reading) God called on people to have dominion over the Earth and his creatures. I'm not religious so I'm not preaching. Apologies if it came off that way.

BTW, the book was written by a Former Bush speech writer.
