Why they don't use 1 or 2
by Ringomon

I actually contacted the yogurt manufacturer once and asked them why they don't make their containers out of the most commonly recycleable 1 or 2 type plastic.

There response was that they choose the plastic that burns the cleanest and decomposes the fastest, because their research showed that a majority of the cups do not get recycled. (I never did my own research though to verify if these two statements are true.)

A little environmental give-and-take. I was ready to persecute the manufacturer at first, but afterward getting theur response I wanted to persecute all the municipalities and people too lazy too recyle.

no petro=based plastic decomposes easily, unless specially formulated to do so, and these are very rare products indeed.

all of them burn very well (although pvc releases toxins)

and the fact that many containers are not recycled is hardly a reason to adopt a container that in most municipalities canNOT be recycled even if you want to. that's a guarantee of going from a low rate of recylcing to zero recycling.

in other words, the pr person or similar who answered your inquiry was bsing. i don't know what their real reason is (cheap?), but it ain't what they told you.

I also contacted a company and was told that this type of plastic gave a longer use by date. In other words, this preserved the contents longer.
