Why re-instate the draft when the army is already too picky?
by sarix

The idea of re-instating the draft to me is a laughable idea. The army is too picky in what they think is a combat ready person. I tried my hand at enlisting in the military, my lowest ASVAB score was 111. What was I told? They didn't want me because I have a rare eye condition that requires me to wear a hard contact. And that even tho right now my vision in one eye is 20/40 that my condition is progressive and will eventually get worse.

I more then meet their requirements ASVAB wise, I'm in fair health other then the eye. So if the Army is really hurting for soldiers then maybe they should actually try enlisting the ones that are applying, rather then consider forcing people in who aren’t interested.

Are you sure you got a 111 on the ASVAB? As for the eye, can you wear glasses instead of contacts to correct it? There are plenty of military members with vision accuity such as yours...is there more to your eye problem than what you are telling?

Frankly, if you can't see or have some weird eye condition that prevents you from passing a range, I don't want you enlisting in the Army. It could by my husband or my brothers life depending on your ability to shoot straight, and if you can't see the target you have no business being down range.

Men and women's lives depend on their fellow soldiers being physically fit and mentally sound. They also depend on their ability to perform their job better than 'to the best of their ability'.

Thank about that for a minute. Now think about if you had a loved one over there, and then think about if their life was on the line because a soldier couldn't see to shoot, or the soldier is too fat or too out of shape to move your (and I am going to use injured here) injured love one to safety. Personally I'm glad the Army is picky.

I don't think I would suggest the Army is too picky. I'm sorry that you were unable to enlist due to a rare eye condition, but you can't wear hard contacts in the field (you aren't supposed to wear ANY contacts in the field), and anyone enlisting today who doesn't think they are going to be deployed is kidding themselves.

They've been raising the enlistment age, issuing more medical and "moral" waivers, and you think they're too picky?

And I think you meant your lowest subtest ASVAB score was a 111. The highest overall score you can get on the ASVAB is the 99th percentile.

My son in perfect health and is in the Reserves has been trying to go active for sometime and because he is a single parent they will not let him go even though I have signed a family care plan. Yet they are taking felons, older members and taking those w/lower scores. Now if his unit is sent overseas I bet they would have no problems sending his backside over there. Yes too picky is accurate!

Lowest score in the asvab implied lowest LINE score. They break down your score into sections. Typically you have to have a line score so high in certain areas to get specific jobs. Meaning even if you scored a 70 on the ASVAB if you have a line score of 50 in engineering they aren’t going to let you do anything that requires engineering.

Line scores are a combination of category scores, and each service uses those category scores differently to achieve line scores...the one number that is compiled the same way in all the services is the AFQT. For certain specialties, they will take your category scores and add them up in a completely different way...coming up with a line score which may suggest your eligibility for a particular career field. You just might qualify for a particular career field, but your AFQT will be too low to allow you to enlist without taking the ASVAB until your AFQT is high enough.

Point being, line scores will change from service to service, the AFQT will not. So line scores aren't necessarily an indicator of how brilliant you are. In the Navy for example, if you were interested in an electronics field, they would gather up 4 category scores to come up with a single line score. Engineering requires a combination of 3 different category scores.
