Truman was a Democrat, not a Republican. Truman was more responsible for defeating Communism than Reagan was. It was his policies and the international organizations he set up that allowed the long term defeat of Communism. The long term, something today's GOP is too stupid to understand which is why they're so badly mishandling the post 911 world.

Not sure about MORE responsible...Reagan took advantage of many enablers truman put in place. Also, Truman used some direct intervention on occaision (Greek Civil War) in order to stem Communist expansion, much like Reagan later on.

One other reason for Truman's lower scores was his backing the establishment of Israel. He had a lot on his plate, much like W has had. It seems there are administrations that come in and clean up messes of bygone administrations and then get tagged with for all problems created in the past. Remember Truman was also picked by Roosevelt because he was considered a weak choice by the Roosevelt administration.

I am not sure why the defeat of Communism would be seen as a Republican or Democratic accomplishment, but instead an American achievement. The Cold War lasted decades, under many Administrations, and I can't think of a single Pro-Communist President. We get so mired in partisanship that we forget that as one nation, we defeated Facism and Communism together.
