two Christian Pop cultures

The author of this article fails to make a critical distinction. There is not one Christian subculture, but two. Certainly the author is correct in stating that there are a lot of commercialized Christian knockoffs of secular culture. When you take a popular t-shirt line or entertainment series and simply slap the name of God on it, then you have what truly is the commercialized Christian culture the author is talking about. There is another subculture, however, and that Christian subculture consists of artists and musicians and others who want to use their talents to express a very real and influential part of their lives. Even with this group the clash still exists between popularity and integrity; a new subgenre of Christian pop music is emerging called "Christian Crossover" music, which is music by some Christian artists which is stripped-down lyrically enough so as not to offend or turn off those who aren't Christians and cannot relate. But while I think it is fine and even good to criticize the pure commercialist subculture that exists, this other subculture where artists and talented people forego fame and popularity and even acceptance to express something that truly defines them should at least be given a modocum of respect.
