Is this a joke?
by wanakee

You have got to be kidding! Why don't you find every dark skinned person on the planet and lay all their anger at Obama's feet! This is so ridiculous.

Michele's thesis is rhetoric that doesn't offend me at all. It's just amazing how you folks try to grasp at any Hannity created hysteria to bring out the worst in people.

Give it a rest! He's still the nominee, no matter how much ridiculous junk you throw at him and his wife.

And when will you nutcases focus on Clinton and McCain. They make Michelle's thesis seem like a suburban birthday speech, if you truly peel the skin on those two 'candidates.'

It's the worst kind of joke too. After reading the article I was wondering what was its purpose. I read some of the thesis and it seemed to me that Mrs. Obama was more concerned about the level of contribution made to black communities by Princeton's black alumni, a topic I have no doubt would have been very relevant at the time of writing. I am baffled at the way in which her views from a thesis written over 20 years ago could be morphed to smear her husband's bid for the White House. I am not even going to get into the way Hitchens completly dismisses the importance of figures like Stokley Carmichael by plucking them from the era that bread them and reducing them to depraved lunatics. I've been giving people in the media the benefit of the doubt when it came to vetting Obama, but this article has floored me. They can't pin the radical ideology of Farakahn, Wright on Obama. They can't point to anything in his political activities or even from his books which could put him in line with the ideology of radical black leaders of this generation or the previous. Their best bet is now to try their best to dig up some link from his wife's thesis from back in the day.

Obama's presence in this campaign is surely bringing out some of the best and worst in Americans. I just hope that people hold themselves up to the same high level of scrutiny after they seek to attack him and his family the way this article has.

Everything Christopher Hitchens writes is a joke - just not a funny one. He is a gung-ho chickenhawk, misogynist, and racist. Why should Obama get any different treatment than any other non-elite white male counterpart on whom The Hitch might deign to smile?

Rather than taking offense, I choose to feel relief that writing articles like this are the primary source of expression for those of Hitchens's ilk in contemporary America. As recently as 50 years ago, The Hitch might have joined others who felt threatened by an uppity Negro like Obama to put down his candidacy in a much more dangerous manner.

A South politician preaches to the poor white man,
"You got more than the blacks, don't complain.
You're better than them, you been born with white skin," they explain.
And the Negro's name
Is used it is plain
For the politician's gain
As he rises to fame
And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.

The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid,
And the marshals and cops get the same,
But the poor white man's used in the hands of them all like a tool.
He's taught in his school
From the start by the rule
That the laws are with him
To protect his white skin
To keep up his hate
So he never thinks straight
'Bout the shape that he's in
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.
