No doubt looting is going on, but not played up in the press. Human nature will be no different anywhere one goes.
Katrina should have taught us all a lesson in self reliance and cooperation. Virtues which I am sure were present in the aftermath of the storm, but the negatives displayed in the aftermath of the storm, and the general slow response of disaster relief agencies, due primarily to hostile elements among the citizenry, impeded the efforts.
Anywhere you have a catastrophe of this magnitude there will be opportunists present to take advantage of the situation. Some may take the form of street gangs looking to profit from the misfortune of others, but there will also be just as many maggots in three-piece suits looking to turn a profit as well.
Just something that comes with the breed known as man.
Many decent people will band together at such times for the common good, but just as many will be out to take advantage of the situation. In the case of Katrina, had National Guard forces been there in adequate numbers, the situation would not have been as bad.
But not to blame Bush or the federal government for this. Even the city police dropped the ball in New Orleans, with nearly half the force abandoning their job responsibilities at a time when their presence was most needed.
That being said, there was still an overwhelming response on the part of both government and private agencies to render assistance to the victims. That it was too little, and in many cases, too late, is just a testimony to the magnitude of the disaster.
No doubt there are people who will prey on the misfortune of the victims here as well. That you might not see it in the press does not mean that it is not happening.
People are the same anywhere you go. You merely have to take the bad with the good.
