Enough politics: Worst Song Lyric Ever
by DrNo
+5 Reply

I've said this before; I'll say it again: I think the worst line ever written in any song lyric is this, written by Dan Hill, Canadian, regrettably:

Sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much

It grates. It torches every raw nerve-end. It is embarrassingly juvenile.

Worst, I can almost see myself uttering something like it as a teenager trying to persuade, but I could never force myself to spew such garbage then, couldn't now.

BBC Radio recently listed it's considered worst lyrics ever, many of which I don't know, but they seem uniformly gawd-awful, except for Toto's Africa, the lyrics of which may be questionable but the tune catchy.

What do you think the worst lyrics or lines-within-lyrics ever written?

I've always had trouble with this one

The mother lode

The bard we know as Morrissey:

I left the North again
I travelled South again
And I got confused - I killed a nun
I CAN'T HELP THE WAY THAT I FEEL
I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I FEEL
I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I FEEL
(I lost my bag in Newport Pagnell)

- The Smiths, "Is It Really So Strange?"

There were plants and birds and rocks and things...

And things? Really, America? Thats the best you could come up with?

Also, anything everything written by Gavin Rossdale.

"Doo doo doo, da dah dah dah, is all I have to say to you."

In my world, it can't get worse than that.

Nights in White Satin
by catnapping

catchy tune...stupid lyrics (doesn't stop me from listening, though - nostalgia, an' all that...)

Cold-hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

Nights in white satin,
Never reaching the end,
Letters Ive written,
Never meaning to send.

Beauty Id always missed
With these eyes before,
Just what the truth is
I cant say anymore.

Two lazy monstrosities and a purple one.
by Inkberrow

Lazy:

"And in this ever changing world in which we live in"

Paul MCartney, "Live And Let Die"

"No, I cannot forget from where it is that I come from"

John Mellancamp, "Small Town"

Purple:

"I've been undressed by kings
And I've seen some things
That a woman ain't s'posed to see,
I've been to paradise,
But I've never been to me.

I've spent my life exploring
The subtle whoring
That costs too much to be free
I've been to paradise,
But I've never been to me."

Wrapped up like a douche
by Keifus

I'm sure we could find any number of things that are all kinds of insipid (seems I was just forced to revisit the Neil Diamond catalogue), but ELO's breakout hit has the double bonus of being badly written in the first place, and then made worse when sung wrong.

Re: C'mon.

The Police wrote some of the smartest lyrics in the history of rock and roll. Sure that one's insipid...it's supposed to be.

Don't think me unkind
Words are hard to find
They're only cheques I've left unsigned
From the banks of chaos in my mind
And when their eloquence escapes me
Their logic ties me up and rapes me

De do do do de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

Poets, priests and politicians
Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for your submission
And no-one's jamming their transmission
'Cos when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De do do do de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

ELO?

I thought Blinded by the Light was Manfred Mann.

Re: So many to choose from

You picked a doozy. A lot that came out of the mid-late 70's fits the bill. But I'm going with this classic:

People are people
So why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

Insipid through and through. The whole reason we don't get along is BECAUSE people are people and people are self-centered, you whiny dolt!

oh, sorry.

It's from God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

My sister and I used to look at each other and roll our eyes whenever we sang that while caroling.

I can help the way I feel, and I lost my bag in a better place; one sane.
