"Rich people don't need all their money"?
by aeschylus
How did you wrench that sentiment from her remarks? If anything, the talk about passing wealth onto the next generation makes it sound like she's against the death tax.
You can't tax the dead

but you can tax those who inherit money.

That's why, the republican framing aside, it's not actually called the "death tax". It's the estate tax. The dead don't pay it, the people who inherit the money (and, it only applies to less than 1% of the population anyway) pay it. But republicans will continue to perpetuate the myth that middle-class farmers will have to sell their land to pay this "death tax", when in actuality, maybe Paris Hilton will have to buy a little less blow when her grandpa kicks it.

Greatbear,

" The dead don't pay it, the people who inherit the money (and, it only applies to less than 1% of the population anyway) pay it.---"

so that makes it OK to take from them...because it's only 1% of the population?

"{But republicans will continue to perpetuate the myth that middle-class farmers will have to sell their land to pay this "death tax", when in actuality, maybe Paris Hilton will have to buy a little less blow when her grandpa kicks it."

Not a myth--small businesses and farms being sold to pay the tax...and again, just because you don't like Paris Hilton or her lifestyle (I don't either) gives us the right to take her money???

Problem I see here it the politicians keep fostering the concept that some people are "too rich" and the state has the right to take their money and give it to other folks.

It is a complete myth

The overwhelming majority of family owned businesses and farms are not subject to the estate tax.

Sorry if facts are upsetting to you.

You can argue the morality of the estate tax, but you don't get the perpetuate a falsehood that it's driving family farms into foreclosure.

As for Paris Hilton, it's not that she's "too rich" it's that she's done nothing to earn it. So go ahead and defend her right to live off her grandpa's work. I'm sure you'll get a lot of sympathy for that.

The very last thing a democratic republic needs is a hereditary oligarchy. The top marginal estate tax rate is about 50%. That's after deductions and credits are applied. That marginal rate sounds about right.

Obama 08!

One of the biggest reasons I work...after the survival stuff...Is to pass on what I've built on to my kids. Sorry, but NOONE has the right to determine that "they didn't earn it" so it should be taxed into oblivion.

I ain't rich. I work hard...and yes...I'm a LOT luckier than I deserve given some of the bogus choices I made when I was younger. But I eventually got off my #$$ and cleaned up my act. I didn't take a handout from anyone.

What our society is losing sight of is that NOONE... especially the government has any right to determine what my "needs" are. Moreover, deciding that I "make too much money," taxing me on it and redirecting my hard-earned results to someone else...sorry, that just doesn't work for me.

Before you consider me callous...yes...I donate to charity & I do volunteer work. That way I get to choose where my donations of time and dollars go, not a beauracratic entity that has to take a portion off the top for "overhead."

If we keep up with the punative taxation for success...we will end up forcing more jobs overseas and closing more businesses.

Please excuse any typos/misspellings.

Regards,

Mike
