Why the sacks?
by BenK

I'm just wondering what advantage the little sacks of oxygen transporter have over loose molecular transporter? They already have those fluoro-whatever molecules for transporting oxygen in artificial blood - and those can get through all sorts of capillaries, etc. So why package the transporters in plastic bags?

I wondered that myself. Maybe it is for removability. Makes them easier to reclaim or sweep out of the blood stream. seems like that much plastic would be harder on natural elimination. Just a SWAG on my part.

A long, long time ago I worked in a lab testing a loose molecular transporter of oxygen. We had a little bit of the stuff and a little bit of money and the few test we could do back then showed that in that case a dogs kidneys flushed the stuff out as fast as we could put it in.

The molecular transporter we were using was called "stroma free hemoglobin".
