In other words: You've solved nothing!

If you want to stop someone who is determined to "steal" votes, an ID requirement does nothing. That same determined person will only have to get a fake ID. And since the polling person doesn't know what that voter looks like, it doesn't prevent the voter fraud.

So, what does it do?

Stops people from voting who don't have (or are required by law to have) an ID. That subset includes the elderly, the rural, the urban.

Nice. So what have we accomplished here? We have not stopped the "fraud" (that is almost non-existent) and we have kept some people who should be allowed to vote from voting.

it also stops college students who go to school outside their resident state. i live in maryland, but go to school in ohio and i do not possess any form of ohio ID that would get me into the polls. the only way around this is to register to vote by absentee ballot. i tried to do this and was told that i could not vote absentee because my mailing address (my school mailbox number) did not match my home address (the building in which i actually reside).

If that's true, then you can definitely add that to the dis-enfranchised list.

But can't you register in Ohio with your college ID. I admit I haven't looked into the Indiana law, but is it only a state-issued ID that they will take, or will any picture ID suffice?

hmmm, i don't think i can use my student ID, although I've never heard expressly that I can't. There has been a lot of effort on campus by political activist clubs to get students registered and voting - and nobody has ever told me that I could go to the polls if I just used my student ID. But it doesn't matter now, cuz I'm graduating and I'll go home and vote in maryland...
