Soccerfreak, there are powerful reasons to expect that McCain won't be the next President. An unprecedented majority of Americans believe this country is "on the wrong track" and John McCain is openly promising to keep us on that track.
That overwhelming majority has already made itself heard at the polls and isn't done yet.
In 2006, Democrats beat all reasonable expectations and took control of both houses of Congress. George Bush, may God bless his empty little head, was visibly stunned.
In 2008, a tidal wave of voters have swarmed to Democratic primaries, in a hard-fought contest between two strong candidates. In some States the second-place Democratic candidate drew more votes than all of the Republican candidates combined, even when there was still a Republican contest.
If Obama is indeed the nominee, it will be because he beat the Clinton machine -- a powerful political force that certainly has not been pulling its punches in the primaries. Taking on McCain -- about whom many Republicans are lukewarm -- is not some mystical order of magnitude more difficult than taking on the Clintons.
To simply say, without any support whatsoever, that "if Obama is the Democratic entry, then McCain will win. It is as simple as that" gives very much the appearance of blowing hot air.
