Obama DOES have a patriotism problem

Noonan's column was perhaps a little hackneyed, but her thesis was dead spot on. Fair or not, Obama has been pegged as yet another "snooty left winger" in the mold of Kerry, Dukakis and McGovern.
Obama's love of country is in question, because, well, a lot of Americans are questioning it. The learned on the left cannot deconstruct, fisk and snark away this problem.
One problem is how we define patriotism. Many progressives love an idealized version of America, one where "We are a tolerant people who tend to judge all, including presidential candidates, as individuals." (Until affirmative action, or equal pay, or some other group-rights program is desired anyway). Progressives love America as it ought to be, as they want it to be, and not necessarily as it is. This is for them a perfectly reasonable view.
Many of us, however harbor irrational, emotional, unconditional love for America- and this quality is not obvious in Obama in particular. Now, uncoditional love for America is not the same as unlimited tolerance for its sins. Any parent should understand this. No matter how your child might misbehave, no matter how much correction is required, you will sacrifice anything and everything for your children.
Americans need to feel that their president has this kind of unconditional love for America. All the presidents in my memory (which reliably goes back to about Regan) exhibited this, even if their decisions and actions often did not satisfy many of us.
Will Obama stand, right or wrong, and defend America, warts and all, like Horatius at the bridge, against all enemies? Does he love America as it is and not as he would like it to be?
John McCain is a flawed candidate- but nobody can doubt that he would give everything he has to keep America safe. More than perhaps any living American, he has demonstrated that quality.
As for Hillary, well, the Hillary of 15 years ago was where Obama is today on this issue; uncomfortable with all things military, and harboring an academic-at-best idealized, conditional love of America. I think she has matured- I hope now she too is capable of being, as John Birmingham (and Glenn Reynolds) frequently fantasize "The most uncompromising wartime president in US history." I still don't much like her style, but she has persuaded me that she is at least capable of being an implacable enemy to those who would destroy us- a quality I require in a commander-in-chief.
Obama. Obama has a problem here. He has not yet met this standard for many if not most Americans. Even if the left thinks he has, he has not! Stop explaining the problem away and recognize that something must be done before you lose yet another presidency.
What can Obama do? I don't know for sure. Dukakis rode a tank and look what it got him. But I think Obama is smarter and better pol. I look forward to his answer. Because he can gas on about healthcare and hope all day, but if he can't convince us he'll be up on the wall with that shotgun when everyone else runs, then none of it matters.
