I laughed at the stupidest bike lanes, especially when my hometown hosted the unluckiest lane. I didn't laugh at the take-away message of bikers beware. While any biker with a wit of sense knows to watch her back and stay aware in traffic, this answer sorely fails to improving bicycle safety.

As a cyclist who was hit (hard) by a car partly due to a poorly designed bike lane, I felt the impact of the low priority given to cyclists. I am still feeling the impact as I no longer am willing to compete with buses and cars through construction zones with closed bike lanes.

If a car had to stop as if its shoelaces were tied would we advise the driver to "be aware"? Of course, cyclists, don't rely on traffic engineers to save you from traffic. Beyond this unhelpful perennial response lies the real message: we need to improve the biking infrastructure in our communities!
