Anyone here heard of Quorn?
by Cyrano

Quorn is a mushroom-based meat substitute. It's available as chicken patties, chicken nuggets and as hamburger patties.

It's horrendously expensive compared to the meats it mimics, and frankly it does not mimic hamburger all that well. On the other hand, it does an excellent job of faking processed chicken breast. I'd eat it in preference to chicken breast patties or chicken nuggets regularly if the makers could just get the price down to something less than highway robbery.

I get a real kick out of vegetarians who eat fake meat. It's as if, deep down inside, they still crave the temptations of charred flesh but just can't bring themselves to admit it. It's very lame.

Or, maybe we just enjoy eating something that tastes good, is low in fat and cholesterol, and has no animal suffering attached to it. Totally possible, you know?

Most of the pleasure of eating meat is from texture -- a lot of its "flavor" is added later, either as seasoning or with condiments. So, meat substitutes try to mimick the texture of meat moreso than the flavor.
