It wasn't 10 points
by daedalusatx
Not to quibble, but Sen. Clinton's win was by 9 points according to the lastest vote tally.

Where I'm looking, it's still at ten.

Clinton 54.6%

Obama 45.4%

9.2% difference

Re: Link?

The problem is shoddy math on the part of the pundits. Clinton got 54.7% of the vote and Obama got 45.3%. Some of the media outlets round these numbers off to 55% and 45%, which looks like a 10% margin. However, the actual margin is 9.4%, so if you're going to round to the nearest percentage point you ought to say 9%.

Check the New York Times: <link>

Or look at CNN or MSNBC's numbers. Both of those round off to 55-45, but if you look at the actual vote totals and calculate the percentages, you come out with 54.7 to 45.3.

It's a little nitpicky, but if the threshold for Clinton to declare a "moral victory" is hitting the double digits, then she didn't do it.

54.55 - 45.45

Work the number's yourself

According to CNN 1,259,832 to 1,044,663 with 99% in. The other 1% is mostly from Chester county. Obama Will likely close the gap a bit more. Hence the 9.1% win instead of the 9.3.

(1,259,832-1,044,663)/(1,259,832+1,044,663)= 9.3%

I think us Obama supporters got to say that since 2 years ago Obama was unknown in Chester County, that means he will have narrowed the gap there with Hillary by at least several 100%'s's.es. That means, my friend, that Chest County's final 1% will put Obama over the top so he REALLY won Penn! Obama obama obama....(me next? is that coolaid? er, okay.... gulp....ah....klunk! feeling fuzzy...).

Chester county went overwhelmingly for Obama, the remaining .05% of districts are mostly in Chester county. Hence Obama will will net 3k or so more votes moving the final tally from 54.65-45.35 to 54.5-45.45.

yes, but I'm just saying that when you factor in where he started from--and how much some of the Obama supporters hate Hillary (and Bill too), well, Mr.: you got yourself an Obama victory in PENN!!! boo-yah!

This is just getting down right silly. The MEDIA says she needs double digits or she is in trouble. We quibble over a percent to meet the MEDIA'S marker????

I am waiting for the day to come when the MEDIA figures out that they might not have their finger on or anywhere near the pulse of america. This is starting to remind me of 2004 when Kerry was a winner for months and suprise! Oh the tears!

Well, yes. The media claims Clinton still has a chance, which is preposterous; the best she can hope for is to keep on dragging this out. It's just irritating that people are going on about Clinton's nonexistent "double-digit win."

Slim... for all your bitter nuttiness, I"m with you on this one. Hillary won. It wasn't enough of a win to give her the nomination, but it gave her new life. She has a chance to have a chance in the race.

If Obama could have held the margin under 5, he might be able to spin that into a victory. However, I think that even that is unlikely. I don't see how you can knock Hillary out of a race with a loss.

There's only one state left that she can lose. NC. If she loses a single primary between now and June 3rd, she's out. Financially, she just can't survive a week of bad press.

She does all of that, I'd give her a 30-40% chance of getting the nomination.

I'm a bit late to this discussion, but yes, it does appear that Clinton won by nine points in PA. But as several readers have noted, the individual margins round to 45 and 55. Since the delegate calculator does not use decimals, we're stuck with a ten-point margin. While it's undesirable, we think this is preferable to arbitrarily rounding Clinton down.
