Cultural Illiteracy of Dickey Roscombe
by Linda Hirshman SlateIcon

Oedipus became his father, not the opposite of his father. He became the king, just like his father and he married the queen, his mother.

If I were going public to show off my knowledge of cultural history, I'd probably read the play first.

In another way, he was the opposite of his father. Oedipus's father married his wife knowing who she was and disposed of his child as a conscious decision, unlike Oedipus who killed his father and married his mother unaware of who they were. Oedipus's father ordered Oedipus off the road because all must make way for the King who is the authority over all matters and the master of all truths, while Oedipus gouges out his own eyes because even Kings must yield to the truth.

One was pragmatic, while the other was idealistic.
