Oryx and Crake
by Trebuchet

The PETA people were reading Margret Atwood.

But I don't think Margaret was envisioning some be kind to animals approach to substitute food. The blobs of chicken growing on the chicken tree were more representative of the commercial process corporations taking over everything including farming.

Oh well, what chickens do survive after PETA sets them free into the wild will make good hunting in a few generations. Hopefully they won't evolve into killer chickens!

For a lighter read, try Rudy Rucker's "Master of Space and Time". The porkchop trees were my favorite part.
