Style vs Substance

Happening to click from Hillary to Obama, I was struck by the content of the two speakers.

Hillary was speaking on more than on platform with minute parts of her plan to make one of her plans about education, health care, sagging bridges. Boooring? I think not. She gives the nitty gritty of what she will do.

Then I switched to Obama in a white shirt, cuffs up, and chanting, "I will be with you, I will fight for you, come with me, let's change the world, education, medicine, better transport." I was caught up in the power of the moment, but there was no there there. It was the evangelical preacher--whom I knew endlessly in my youth-- that make people come to the altar to be saved, but with the high there were passing references but by no means to substantial statements of Hillary. Obama will be with the crowd and for them but whither and what for that we can see, feel, touch and confront the realities.

I agree.
Wrong.

No one gets through Harvard Law School on their style. And anyone who argues that Obama has no substance need only listen to his speech on racism.

He's not your average guy.

David Frum is also a graduate of Harvard Law school. You know, the guy who wrote the "Axis of Evil" speech.

I'm sure Obama does have some substance. It would be nice to see it. And I have listened to his speech on racism. It reminded me of Nixon's Checkers speech. You do have a point though; the average guy can't pull off a checkers speech.

Hillary Clinton has a plan for sagging bridges? You do realize that her "I can fix anything" remark on the Colbert Report was a joke, don't you?

Obama 08!

We don't necessarily need someone with "THE PLAN". We don't need or want someone to "FIGHT FOR US".

Sure we need someone with a plan, but mostly America needs someone who will wake us up. Somone who will help us believe in our best selves, and something we want to see, our best America. We want someone who will INSPIRE US TO FIGHT FOR OURSELVES.

We don't need an all knowing, controlling mother..we need a friend we can believe in. Someone who believes in us, more than they believe in themselves.

Bwahahahahah! You . . . you
by Gatewood

. . . you . . . want to sit down and have a beer with Obama!

I knew that the majority of the moronic hysterics that were intending to vote for Obama were JUST the flip side of the moronic hysterics that voted for G.W. Bush. Thanks for confirming that.

You don't need a President with "plans": you want someone with "priorities". Plans, those that work, anyway, are designed by technocrats, experts, not politicians. You want a President who can bring people together around his/her priorities. You want a President who will chose competent and respected people for his Cabinet to push for the execution of those priorities. You want a President who will work with all sides to pursue these priorities. You want a President who will inspire people to believe those priorities will be carried-out. You want a President for ALL Americans. I have heard nothing from or about Obama which would suggest he is not fully capable of being such a president.

The Obamabots are dreamers and hopers and they are easily led. Nothing in Obamas past shows any promise of him actually having any ability to deliver on his nebulous campaign sermons. He does not have the financial training, He does not have the diplomatic experience. He has never been an executive of a state or even a major company. He does not have the character necessary to equitably lead this country. His oddball idea of race healing somehow incorporates racial bigots like Pastor Wright. He intends to take from the hard worker and give to anyone or any country he feels deserves it. Obama is a socialist. Be prepared for inflation a la Carter with interest rates in double digits.

But Obama speaks eloquently with power and wit. He's a good salesman and his followers are ripe to buy what he's selling. They can't wait to sign the contract and open up their wallets. They just know that Obama will make changes just like he says. They fail to see that they changes they think Obama means is different than the changes others thinks he means. We have no idea what Obama means by "change" because he does not say. He wants everyone to believe in their own concept of change. And they are. Look at the trance like glaze in their eyes, the thunderous applause when Obama says how sunny the morning is. There is no substance, just vague, fuzzy promises that means everything to everyone but genuinely holds absolutely nothing for any of them. They are lemmings gleefully headed for the cliffs and Obama their Piper. Fools indeed.

Scoot'r-d ... I think you've missed Sen Obama's point and appeal ... No President can make the changes by themselves ... it takes ALL of us ... actively talking to and working with ... each other ... to bring about change. Do you NOT believe that your ideas, thoughts count or matter? For too long in Washington, special interest groups, lobbyist, those with big money have been setting the agenda and making policy ... to the determent of most Americans. The gulf between the rich and poor as widened in the past 7 years. That is by design. The design of the very same "special" interest groups and lobbyist who have PAID for it ie Big oil, banks, pharmicuitical companies, etc. I know this is an over-simplication of a complex issue ( the running of Govt), however, you get the point. The individual HAS ideas and thoughts that they'd like to express and with consenus get emplemented. Is THAT too much to ask of a Republic the states "one man (person) ... one vote?

Note: Where is spell check when you need it?

Surprise, Obama has lobbyist relations too. He calls them "bundlers" and takes their contributions and obligates those relations just like all the other politicians. Obama is the one selling snake oil here. It is not hard to see that many in our country are disillusioned and for many reasons. Promise them all better and they all will vote for you. Be extra good at making those promises and you'll be adored. Obama wants the "easily duped" midwestern people to not vote on emotional issues but economic issues. But, Obama has no economic plans for these same people. He is appealing to their emotions in the same hackneyed fashion as someone citing religion or the 2nd amendment does.

It would be one thing IF Obama had any real experience to back up his promises. I'd believe that a Trump might mend a failing business. Exactly what does Obama have in his resume that indicates or demonstrates that he can be who or what he claims? He's an attorney and a bunny Senator and not one iota of anything else. Tell you what. If you buy that Obama can fix our country I've got the London Bridge I am willing to let go of cheaply. For you, today, only 100K. Do yourself a favor, dream in your sleep, not in the voting booth.

If Obama's campaign is any predictor of his presidency, he will do well at managing money, building a widespread coalition, staying true to message, and keeping his cool. He meets legitimate problems head-on with maturity and eloquence (his race speech), and generally communicates like a respectful adult. I have not seen great evidence of this in the other candidates, and certainly not our current president.
