Defanging polygamy
by Coelacanth

Polygamy as it's commonly practiced in religious groups in the US really is about oppression and subjugation of women, and this naturally extends to the children in the clan. The relationship whereby one man has exclusive sexual rights over a number of women both illustrates and reinforces the power relationship that underlies the whole arrangement.

Hence my modest solution: Polygamy of any flavor (polygyny, polyandry, group marriage) should be allowed and even legally recognized so long as everyone in the relationship has at least two sexual partners in the group. This automatically flattens the power structure and puts everybody onto a more equal footing. Imagine a situation where one man has two wives. If the two women are also doing the horizontal tango between themselves, it goes a long way toward dethroning the man as "head of the clan." And, knocked from his patriarchal pedestal, the fellow might possibly fall straight into the sack for a steamy menage a trois, democratizing things even more explicitly. Anyway, you get the idea....

haha, I like the solution, though I fear it's gonna be hard to enforce. "Sir, open up! It's the police. Are you letting your wives have sex with each other? Right now? Yes? Well... let me just make sure then."

I think it could also be accomplished by three-way marriages: everyone is an equal partner before the law and married to each other (each person having equal rights to benefits, pensions etc of all spouses). Although this would first require the marriage between people of the same sex to be recognized. You also wouldn't solve the problem of private power structures, but I'm not sure the law can anyway. Certainly not considering groups like the FLDS are based on the idea that female subjection to men is demanded by their God. And the fact that it's not just the men who feel that way.

We just mandate webcams for their bedrooms!
Well sure. But...

You're assuming that the various and sundry conjugal activities are going to be limited to the bedroom. Is that a safe assumption? I'm envisioning something more like a Big Brother scenario. Cameras everywhere... And then we're going to have to recruit a phalanx of reviewers to scan the recordings and make sure that everyone is sufficiently... engaged.

Such sacrifices we must make to ensure justice for all.
