obama's comments
by Zerilli

Obama's comments about people who are losing out in Bush's America are not what many people clain them to be. They ring true, not false. Why is it false to assert, as he did, that when people are down and out they tend to blame those who have even less (the immigrants) or cling to religion or their guns? Obama is a religious person, so his point was not to criticize religiosity as such. It is the fantatical form of religiosity--"my God and no other"-- that he attacks. He also rightly criticizes using religion as an escape from the world's problems. Religion can be the "opium of the masses," just as Marx proclaimed, or it can be an instrument of political activism, as it is in liberationist theology. As for guns, come on! Who would deny that guns are a huge problem in this country. That Hillary reacted to Obama's comments by telling the story of being a little girl and learning to shoot a gun is a sign of how desperate she is. No one who cares about gun control--and the record shows that she does--should engage in that kind of pandering.

The problem with Obama is that he speaks the truth, just as his pastor spoke the truth about 9/11 (is it really such a surprise that we have those kinds of enemies given our political support of authoritarian governments in the Middle East) and the disdain and indifference with which this goverment treats African-Americans (be it on the aids issues or whatever). He says it like it is, and for that he has to apologize!
