How selfish can we be?
by nolalady
This article left a sick feeling in my stomach because I know there are so many Americans focused on this very thing . . . how much more will WE have to pay. How do we easily forget why we've been able to buy things so cheap? Horrible working conditions and wages for people with no voice and no power to change their circumstances. And now that the Chinese workers are starting to demand the simple rights Americans take for granted, we want to whine about us, in the wealthiest country, having to pay a little more for our "stuff" we just have to have. No wonder the rest of the world doesn't think to highly of Americans. We think too highly of ourselves.

How naive of you to think that the poor chinese people are the ones setting the prices.

If this is how you feel about America, please move to China will you?

The reason people buy chinese goods in this country is to save money. If the USA made product is comparable in price, hopefully this will encourage more people to buy our products. Therefore, creating more jobs here. Let's stop outsourcing! China doesn't buy from us!

Wake up. The move to manufacture in other countries is only to increase profits!!!! What happens when these companies find that no market exists for their products. The "wealthiest country in the world" exists only for a few not the many.

I'm proud to be an American, but I don't think that is the same as thinking that we are always right. Is it wrong for me to be an American, but also desire justice and rights for those in countries listed in the article such as China, India, etc.?

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I would much rather buy something made in the USA, and therefore creating more jobs here, rather than supporting what is going on in China. My concern is the attitude we as Americans can have in that whatever it costs others to keep our prices low is worth it.
