Pop Quiz: Wright or MLK?
by groovelady

On the 40th anniversary of King's assassination, many people--even conservative hacks--say they're eulogizing MLK when, in truth, they're euthanizing him, killing the vigor of his words, taking the bite and righteous indignation out of King who, like Wright, often condemned America.

MLK often condemned America because he loved America, because, as he said, “there is no deep disappointment where there is no deep love.” We all know America was not built by the flag-wavers, nor were its liberties protected by chickenhawk draft dodgers like Cheney and Bush. If you don’t believe in war, be a conscientious objector, march against war, but don’t support war for everyone else save yourself. Be like King, and speak out against it.

King, a few years prior to his death, was enormously unpopular with white conservatives, was dis-invited from the White House, taken off the college-tour circuit, etc, because he espoused some of the same exact views Wright does. But white conservatives trot him out nevertheless because Abraham Lincoln--their only non-racist of note--has been dead over 150 years, so, they need someone.

King was the gadfly of the American conscience (interestingly enough, Hitchens seems to confuse being a contrarian with being a gadfly, but guess what—one believes in something, the other simply believes in not believing in something, just as one is a gadfly, and the other, is, well, just an annoying fly—I’ll leave you to figure out which is which).

So, I give you this pop quiz—King or Wright?

1) "America was founded on genocide, and a nation that is founded on genocide is destructive."

2) “To be [black] in America is to hope against hope.”

3) “Many of the ugly pages of American history have been obscured and forgotten....America owes a debt of justice which it has
only begun to pay.”

4) “...the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government.”

5) “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.”

6) “The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state.”

7) “[Being black] in America means…having your legs cut off, and then being condemned for being a cripple. It means seeing your mother and father spiritually murdered by the slings and arrows of daily exploitation, and then being hated for being an orphan.”

8) “If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.”

9) Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at [blacks] in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them.

10) There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love.

king lived in the hood till he died. wright is in some exclusive lily white suburb with the fleeced flocks money.

king believed a man should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. write believes none of that.

king believed the promised land is equality. wright believes the promised land is revenge.

king was an educated, articulate man. wright is a nose boning, pajama wearing, ebonics speaking, clown.

king was a great man. wright is a crip.

big difference.

The biggest problem is Obama did not nip this in the bud early. I'm talking about the pastor thing.

That and Michelle Obama's comment about this being the first time in her adult life she feels proud to be an American.

They both have done very well, and yet I hear this stuff from them.

It's quite alright, once the REAL attack ads begin Obama is going to wish he denounced Wright much sooner.

He has lost the advantage of being a relatively unknown.

Now we know. Hitchens comment about Obama throwing his Grandmother under the bus is hilarious BTW.

'The biggest problem is Obama did not nip this in the bud early. I'm talking about the pastor thing.'

yeah, like 20 years ago. if he wants to preach victimhood, that is fine and dandy. if obama and the new african queen want to sit there and listen, fine and dandy.

it will be used against them as it should. blacks playing the trump victim card constantly works against them. asian immigrants hold blacks in contempt. mexicans see them as coddled and catered to. always proclaiming that their suffering trumps all other suffering and that shit.

the new immigrants come here and see that blacks live better in the US than any place in the world. including the shit holes they run.

<<<mexicans see them as coddled and catered to. always proclaiming that their suffering trumps all other suffering and that shit.>>>

You know it's funny I was talking to some illegal immigrants(I do this pretty much every week, in spanish no less) about the time Vicente Fox made his comment that "Mexicans do the jobs not even blacks want" or something like that.

They expressed dissappointment he would make such politically sensitive comment.

But they also said "yeh, but its true".

where i live, the redneck white boys still do the dirty work. the blacks stay over in their end of town pushing drugs and collecting welfare and the mexicans make more money in atlanta.

que lastima!!

Groovelady, thank you for helping us to put these comments in perspective! I am not a Jeremiah Wright fan, but it is enlightening to see that it's all been said before, by a man we really admire. Having said that, Obama does seem too conciliatory in general. To carry the Messiah analogy, I'm ready to see him confront the merchants in the temple. A president cannot and should not placate everyone. Judgment is part of the job.

'King, a few years prior to his death, was enormously unpopular with white conservatives, was dis-invited from the White House, taken off the college-tour circuit, etc, because he espoused some of the same exact views Wright does.'

conservatives my ass. it was LBJ and bobby kennedy who had hoover wiretapping him, tailing him, blackmailing him and harassing him. you need to read up on a little history for a change.

he was 'disinvited' to LBJ's white house and it was the conservatives fault? man it must be nice to be a liberal as you obviously can be stupid and get away with it.

"Someone" has read more King biographies than you've read books. (Hint: that someone is me!) And, chang and tsukuhara, you still haven't answered all the pop quiz. Time is running out, dunces!
