The last person tried for war crimes against Americans was?
by kd6rxl
As far as I can determine the last American battlefield enemy to halfway observe the Geneva Convention was Nazi Germany, 60 years ago. Since then not only has not a single battlefield opponent observed the Geneva Convention I doubt there's been a single instance of an international human rights body calling for, much less effecting, a prosecution for any of the many, many war crimes committed against Americans. As far as I'm concerned this clamoring for war crimes trials is simply due to an anti-American mental pathology based on envy/resentment of, or rivalry with, the top dog.

Put it another way, if you think deposing the Hussein regime and installing democracacy was immoral it doesn't say much about your own moral character.

How many Iraqis have we killed to depose Hussein? More than he killed and he was an evil bastard. Is that moral just because we did it in the name of the vague ideology of installing democracy which won't even work in the long term? Going to war for no reason is/should be a crime. Justifying torture should be a crime. If our enemies do it thats all the more reason not to; we are supposed to have the moral high ground.

Keep your eye on Iraq while Bush/Chenny clean out the banks the same as the First Bush cleaned out the Savings and Loans.

The MEANS matter

.

The HOW in what you do often matters at least as much as the WHAT.

In this case the WHAT was deposing Hussein. That itself isn't inherently immoral. However when the US Government and military

  • Suspends Habeas rights for citizens and non-citizens alike
  • Violates 4th Amendment rights
  • Tortures (violating 8th Amendment rights)
  • Imprisons with no meaningful Due Process (Vth, VIth, VIIth Amendment rights)
  • Lies to its citizens and the world community
  • Counts US Casualties but not Iraqi casualties
  • Stands by as ethnic cleansing occurs

Now you may consider it anti-American to expect the US Government to abide by the US Constitution and general democratic and human rights principles. But I somehow suspect that most folks consider the violation of the US Constitution to be anti-American.

How is hating the limits the US Constitution places on the Government "anti-American pathology"?

How many Iraqis have we killed to depose Hussein? More than he killed...

If we're going to compare apples to apples then IMHO we also need to count the various wars he started. I haven't looked this up but usually the numbers I hear tossed around start at a million.

And don't under estimate the ethical issues that his body count was pretty deliberate, and his whole "rule by fear" style was pretty repulsive as well.

Add to that his obsession with getting and using weapons of mass destruction and the scale tips even further.

Is that moral just because we did it in the name of the vague ideology of installing democracy which won't even work in the long term?

You mean like it didn't in Japan and Germany? Think about what those countries were up to in the 1940's and then what they look like now. Better still, look at their neighbors and what they had to do just to keep up.

It's not so much ideology as it is history.
