Well-Traveled road of myth, not history

I think Christianity has brought many worthy things to the world. But frankly, there is no historical proof that Jesus existed. No name in the roles of prisoners, no reports of the masses he gathered in local or Roman records, nothing.
His life is a beautiful, meaningful, spiritual tale that should inspire us, especially in today's world. But the wars and battles have been fought over a church and religion that are as manufactured (and, don't get me wrong) just as real as Coca-Cola Corp.
Jesus is not history, folks. He's legend, myth, a tale told to inspire and enlighten and elevate the value of ALL mankind. And womankind.
The Samaritan story -- we should apply to all people of other faiths. Being reborn? Living our lives with mature knowledge -- becoming an adult is much like a rebirth, especially if you consider it to be spiritual and intellectural and emotional maturity. Consider his teachings: to turn the other cheek (de-escalate situations both personal and political); treat others as we would be treated (a little respect, a little tolerance, and a little caring); and I particularly like the lesson of feeding the multitudes at the wedding (couldn't we solve the problem of feeding the world if we work together?).
These are beautiful messages and they have the possibility to make me a Christian in a way that no literal interpretation of the bible, or a desire to make this myth history, ever would.
Are we so unsophisticated in the 21st century that we cannot learn by spiritual teachings but instead need our gods to be made of contradictory, sometimes artbitrary, other times cruel, pseudo-facts?
