Obama donated 60k of his 900k income to charity. This comes to approx. 6+% annual. For the richest of Americans, that is well above the norm. For a candidate that touts the middle class and its challenges, the real issue isn't whether he is a "skinflint", but rather where does enough giving stop?

Regarding folks badmouthing Obabma's Charity donations: I am NOT an Obama (nor Clinton) fan...I'm pretty conservative...Having said that...IMHO...The only things we need to be scrutinizing and opining on in Sen. Obama's tax return is whether it is legal...Period. If he earned his money honestly and according to the current law took appropriate deductions and thereby made a whole bunch of money...then good on him...That's America. Not my place, or anyone else's for that manner to tell him how he spends it (except for Mrs. Obama...that's the way it works in my house).

it's my business when he starts yapping about how taxes should be raised to help the poor. he wants me to do what that cheap asshole won't only he has the power of government to take the money. the government should not in the business of charity and if double talking cheapskates such as obamo would put their money where their mouths are, they wouldn't be.

You've gotta good point there. I just have a hard time with ANYONE (except Whatsername of course) telling me what I "need" & how I should spend my hard-earned money...And I'm behind you 100%...It ain't the the Government's job to do charity work.

Typical right wing nonsense. Conservatives are said to donate more to 'charity' only because they include church offerings in the 'charity' category, which is nonsensical.

Icemilkcoffee, George Will may be conservative, but he is a fair minded reporter. I read and regard what he writes. I may not always agree with him, but I know enough to not blanketly dismiss his ideas because he is more conservative than me. That would be just plain foolish, and that report is, unfortunately, true.

Why should you have to donate your money to charity at all? America is a capitalist society in which individuals can work hard to acheive anything. Charity is something that an individual can contribute to only if they feel it necessary out of the kindness in their hearts.
