So teenage abortions are better?

I'm just wondering where this logic is going.

In the film Juno, the girl makes it clear that she is not up to raising a kid on her own. Hence the adoption.

I agree with you. I think the author of this piece has something she is not saying. Perhaps she had an unexpected pregnancy some time in her life, or knew someone who did, and she feels that it is fine to look with contempt on "unwed" mothers. The reality of this situation is this- MOST pregnancies in the world are not "planned". Heaven forbid if every child in the world was only born into two parent, perfect, loving, financially secure homes. The population would die within a generation. I don't know about the author, but I, for one, would like to err on the side of being helpful and compassionate, rather than judgemental and negative.

Yoffe is not defending the technician for her assumption, rather for her views on mothers raising their children when the child would be better off adopted. It turns out Juno is making a good choice, and perhaps Yoffe makes the mistake of using this as an example, but she isn't saying Juno is making the wrong decision.

Moreover, while compassion is important, society requires a balance of compassion and shame. Some people respond better to one than the other, and as Yoffe points out, there is a problem. Clearly each case is different, but as there is a broad trend it is important to discuss broad solutions.

Yes, in most cases, teenage abortions are better, especially for younger teenagers, for whom an abortion is much less of a health risk than a full term pregnancy.

It's not just the pregnant teenager who is at risk. Our cruel adoption laws pose significant psychological burdens on adoptive children who are effectively forbidden by law from even knowing their birth parents in most cases.

Better still is comprehensive sex education that prevents these tragedies from occurring. Expecting we could ever have 100% compliance with any sexual abstinence regimen is dangerously delusional. Our adolescents absolutely must be equipped to protect themselves, in every sense of the word.
