Dumb law
by theaterowner

Yet another glowing example of our 'nanny' government at work. Not only is this 'law' stupid, it wont work. Why? Because to verify an ID you have perform basic math which is beyond the skill set of most cashiers working today. Thats why we have pictures of hamburgers on registers and scanners. Want proof? I own a liquor license so I pay attention to these things. In a local sting operation out here in New Hampshire (where liquor is sold only through State owned stores) a clerk at a State store sold liquor to a minor even though the person clearly looked like a minor, and presented an ID with a birth date that indicated she was under 21. The clerk didn't even need to do the math, since they had one of those glaring red posters with the date you had to be born by!

If the guv'ment thinks this law will keep liquor out of the hands of minors they obviously know nothing about how kids get liquor. A minor doesn't walk into a liquor store and TRY to buy liquor. They walk into a store where they KNOW they can buy liquor. I saw this happen a month ago where a line of obviously under-aged teenagers were standing in a checkout line of a local gas station each carrying a case of beer. In front was as cashier/manager probably 19 or 20 himself who was checking out these kids as fast as they could walk up.

Underage drinkers aren't stupid, and even if they are, they are still smarter than these legislators.

Has anyone ever heard of this and can you please me tell if this is legit? My roommate who is 22 years of age still has a license that has the "under 21" banner across the top because when she got the license she was still under 21 and it hasn't expired yet, so naturally she still uses it. Well, she was in 7-11 the other day trying to purchase a six pack of beer and they refused to sell it to her even though she was over 21 just because it said that. Even the manager refused. Is that some kind of law? Or are these people off their rocker?

I will tell you that she would never be served in my establishment with that license. I have heard of that happening though. Many States have gone to 'other' indicators on licenses to help the mathematically challenged from doing any brain work. Unfortunately, some of these states do not automatically expire those licenses on the 21st birthday since htey may follow some other policy, such as licenses are valid for 5 years. She should go in and get a new license to end this confusion.

At my place such a license would be considered 'questionable' especially if it were out of state. Anything questionable, including licenses that are bent, broken, etc are rejected as a valid form of ID.

In my state there are these signs that say IF YOU ARE BORN BEFORE (changeable date) YOU ARE TOO YOUNG. End of "basic math" problem.

Years ago an uncle in business in a small town showed me how judge age. There were two ways, one was to look at the ankle which has all sorts of problems. The other was to look at the skin on the back of the hand. The fat under the skin thins at a fairly linear rate. Look at the back of a babys hand. Its almost round. At the age range discussed here it is quite good with a little practice. I am long out of practice. I worked with a Japanese gentleman who was 27 but looked young enough that the cops would stop him for suspicion of under age driving. By very carefully concentrating on the skin alone I was able to hit his age exactly. It takes practice. There is nothing that I know of that will alter this skin flexibility. I am told that here is one small group of East Europeans that does not age this way.

Well, a store owner can refuse service to anyone they like. Your friend doesn't have a constitutional right to buy liquor at 7-11.

The easy move is to go spend an afternoon at the DMV (or DPS or whatever) and get a brand new piece of plastic.

I have long been old enough to legally purchase alcohol, but as I recall, when I was younger and wanted to acquire beverages illegally, I would simply recruit an older person to make the purchase for me. It is not so difficult.
