I was shocked when I was out there recently and my Verizon cell, which worked in freakin' India, barely worked in Wisconsin. My Wisco friends tell me there are a couple of local cell monopolies that have effectively kept out standard services like Verizon, which is no help to the local citizenry, not to mention befuddled visitors like myself! But this is one of the many problems with the telco/cell providers, the lack of universal standards and therefore, universal coverage.

Re: There are still places where you can't "hear me now"

I'm in Wausau and have verizon due to the coverage of their phone directory.
I also have a small business and, without their directory, almost nobody would know about me.

Totally spoiled by Verizon's incredible coverage on the East Coast, I was in for a rude awakening.

There aren't just "dead spots" here - there are just huge swaths of area that aren't supported by cell towers at all (the maps are NOT to be believed). You can be driving down major interstates and not have any bars for a good hour or two.

If I could afford it, I'd have a second land line for my small, home-based business. If it improves, I will get a second one, because it's still more reliable than my cell phone.
