Then I stepped back figured that you were transitioning from thenewspaper world not the blogging world. Only then did I realize that that is what I want you to keep. Whereas blogs are narrowcasting into sports and gadgets and celebrities and economics a news magazine us all those together. That's why I come to slate--when I'm not content with one of my narrowcasting rss feeds.

So don't "simplify" the page by letting me hide sections. In fact, mix it up. Tag it, but list it like a front page--like your homepage with your cover stories right there on top and the interesting ones that will never show up on my rss feeds.

Goodbye

Today's Papers was the only thing that kept me coming back to Slate. It's part of how I wake up in the morning. Like Thomas Picton, guadupede and others who've posted here today, I do not see a reason to change it. I continued to go first to Today's Papers, and then to other news sources, because TP would summarize how the major papers were reporting the top stories differently. I don't just want to know the news, I want to know the ways it's being reported because I don't trust any one news source. TP was a good, quick (and often delightfully snarky) way to begin coming at the news from different angles, daily. It reported on journalism while directing me to the news. There's lots of places to get the top news stories. I don't need one more.

I will miss TP. But I also remember writing an email to Slate complaining when my daily TP email started giving me only the first couple paragraphs and then directed me to the web. After my connection speed finally caught up to the web's content, I began to enjoy my daily visit to slate.com. So, I'll give Slate the benefit of the doubt this time and try Slatest, although I'd prefer to have Slatest AND TP.

Peggy

News 'Dots'

Great, everything is connected.
Sen.
Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts left a giant’s shoes to fill in the U.S. Congress.
Having been diagnosed and undergone surgery for brain cancer last year,
speculation has already been well under way as to who would replace the “lion of
the Senate” when the time came.

One
of the names frequently mentioned is Crowley native Victoria Reggie Kennedy, Ted
Kennedy’s wife of the past 16 years. Reggie is the daughter of former judge and
state politico Edmund Reggie.

(Edmund
Reggie directed John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign in Louisiana in 1960 and
went on to become a close confidant of Edwin Edwards.) Victoria Reggie, an
attorney, has widely been credited as the resolute woman behind Sen. Kennedy’s
renewed vigor and work focus of the past 15 years, helping him cement his
reputation as an esteemed statesman.

In the new book Ted Kennedy: The
Dream that Never Died, recently excerpted
in Vanity Fair, Reggie is painted as one of three rival heirs
apparent, along with Ted’s nephew Joe Kennedy and niece Caroline Kennedy. The
Boston Globe is reporting today that Victoria Reggie has
been lobbying Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick to honor one of Ted Kennedy's
last wishes: that the state allow the governor to appoint his successor in the
event of his death so as not to lose a crucial vote on pending health care
reform legislation. The Globe has also recently reported, through its own
insider source, that Victoria

I'm not reading anything else, and once it becomes clear that you're not re-starting TP, I will stop coming back forever.

Hilda Solis (D-Calif.), who co-sponsored the bill in the House
• 1993: was arrested at the Los Angeles riots that followed the acquittal of cops in the Rodney King beating. "I was arrested simply for being a police observer," says Jones, who had just graduated from Yale Law School and was working with the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights in San Francisco.
• 1999: was arrested in the 1999 Seattle protests against the World Trade Organization
• Excerpt from a Nov. 2005 interview in the East Bay Express:
Jones had planned to move to Washington, DC, and had already landed a job and an apartment there. But in jail, he said, "I met all these young radical people of color -- I mean really radical, communists and anarchists. And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.'" Although he already had a plane ticket, he decided to stay in San Francisco. "I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary." In the months that followed, he let go of any lingering thoughts that he might fit in with the status quo. "I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th," he said. "By August, I was a communist." In 1994, the young activists formed a socialist collective, Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, or STORM, which held study groups on the theories of Marx and Lenin and dreamed of a multiracial socialist utopia. They protested police brutality and got arrested for crashing through police barricades. In 1996, Jones decided to launch his own operation, which he named the Ella Baker Center after an unsung hero of the civil-rights movement.

No "Slatest" or "Today's Papers" on Weekends?

Well now I think we know why "Today's Papers" disappeared. One would have expected him to watch his step more closely, so as to pave the way for future people of color. Instead he has festered a culture of hate in his feeble attempt to "redistribute" the nation's wealth,..his attempt to "socialize" the American system of capitalism. He's out of control and America now sees that. From the facist government control of the banks, to the outright communist confiscation of GM & Chrysler, the illegal appointment of 30+ Czars ( to poke the congress in the eye) 5 of which are self avowed marxists. WH imaginary powers are springing up like dandelions. Now we're hearing of an "Internet Czar", and an FCC Czar to shut down and silence the opposition. Well boy,...America just shut YOU down on government run healthcare. You've been scratchin' for a war against America since last january. Keep it up and you'll get a war even YOU won't believe and probably not the kind you envisioned. This is the United States of America. It will not allow itself to be "ruled" by a tyrant,..or a dictator. America , by god sir, is going to be run by Americans. I wouldn't get too comfy with your place in the world. The democrats won't hold the house and senate forever. When they're out,...we're going to nail your ass to the wall. I've tried "Slatest" for the week. I've signed up for my thrice daily emails. I've given it a shot.

It's ok. It's similar to what every other news aggregator does, except maybe not as well. As with other aggregators, I've seen some interesting links. But it's no TP.

TP is how I start every morning. If I don't have time for any other news in the morning (or any news at all), I at least read TP. When I lived in Alaska, I'd read the next day's TP every night before bed. When I had limited bandwidth in Afghanistan, I'd read TP. When I've been out of internet contact for a few days, I go back and read all the TPs I missed to catch up with what was going on in the world. I don't think this is possible with the "Slatest."

TP is what brings me to Slate everyday and makes it my #1 news source. I imagine the constant updates to the news aggregator are designed to bring people to Slate more-and-more, but I find myself wanting to come less-and-less.

What's the value added to the "Slatest" over other news aggregators? It might be the helpful (TP-like) summaries that go with each article. But who wants to click on each link to read these summaries. At least put the whole summary on the front page (like with TP) so I can read them and eat my breakfast without have to click every 30 seconds.

My understanding is that the "Slatest" is supposed to up-date three times a day to match the news cycle. But it doesn't. The Morning, Afternoon and Evening editions share substantial overlap in content. This is annoying and a repetitive waste-of-time. Please, either update all 12 articles listed, or list a fewer number that you have the time and resources to update.

Libs fold like a lawn chair over P changes.
