An adjective in African American slang used to express approval. Hence, someone or something that is phat could be cool, entertaining, intelligent, attractive or otherwise to be admired. When the word first surfaced in the 1960s, men generally used it to describe attractive, or "fine", women. This meaning of phat has been assigned numerous backronym meanings, most commonly Pretty, Hot And Tempting, but also including others such as "Pretty Hips, Ass and Tits", "Pretty, Hot And Thick" and "Penis, Hips, Ass and Tits" for unisex reasons

Does anyone remember how to sew their own clothes?

No, not really. It's on everything, not just shirts for young girls. If you want to think of a cat with a long tail as something sexual, you can, but that doesn't mean that that was the original intent. (I, too, have a "dirty mind", and can find a sexual reference anywhere if I look hard enough.) Also, the previous poster was incorrect about what "phat" stands for. Do you really think that (when the kids were still using the word) some kid saying "Yo, that beat is phat", means anything sexual? Of course not! I mean, I saw a movie once where the main character said "phat" meant "pretty, hot, and tempting", but I understood that that was just how that character was using the word at the time. Everytime I've heard that word used, it always meant "cool" or "nice" or something like that, as in "That's a phat outfit".

Re: I do agree just not with the Baby Phat comment!

Hmmm-when I read Emily's post, and looked at the image of the t-shirt, what I thought she was getting at was the, ahhh, suggestive shape that the kitty's tail sketeched out, which also happens to suggest a synonym of "kitty". I look at my best friends little sister who is 14 years old and she seriously looks older than me! And her and her friends just dress like total skants! It just boggles my mind because even when I was that young my clothes were never like that. And I stayed VERY fashionable. Even now that im 21 and go to clubs and bars my clothes still cover my body and I still get hit on! These younger generations just think that they need to be as skanky as possable to get male attention and what they still have yet to figure out is that the male attention they will get by dressing like that is not there DREAM prince charming coming along. The only thing I really have to disagree with about this artical is the Baby Phat clothing line. The name BABY PHAT has nothing to do with baby FAT.. If you know who she used to be married to His clothing line was PHAT FARM... so she played off of his already mass manufactured line and made it Baby Phat for women. A name that is girly and can catch attention! But it does not have anything to do with baby fat or anything sexiual. I wear that line a lot and they are of great quality and worth every penny.
