It's not the "Chinese" New Year... it's the Lunar New Year. In fact, in Mandarin the holiday is called Lunar New Year so I'm not sure why people in the US insist on calling this "Chinese" New Year. Lot of different cultures celebrate the lunar New Year, it's not a Chinese thing. We don't refer to the Orthodox Christmas as the "Russian" or "Greek" a holiday (well, some people do and they are politely told why it's incorrect) so why do we call this the "Chinese" new year? Do other people that celebrate the Lunar New Year in fact celebrate "Chinese" New Year? Do Chinese people also celebrate the "Chinese" Mother's Day? Come on Slate... you guys should know better.
