Draft Colin Powell for President - 2008

Although the votes are not in, it has become quite obvious that the Democrats candidate for president is either going to be Senators Clinton or Obama. On the other hand, it has become quite obvious that the Republicans have no idea who to nominate to oppose the Clinton/Obama candidacy. ["Splintered GOP Seeks Unifying Presence," Post, 12/23/07] Let me propose a novel idea so that the Republican Party can at least have a good chance of capturing the White House in the 2008 election. That is, Vice President Dick Cheney has accomplished all he can accomplish in this administration and will arguably leave behind a very worthy legacy. Having said that, it is time now for Cheney to resign for medical or other reasons, and allow President Bush to appoint a new vice president to serve out his term. To mend the conscious and soul of the nation, the best-qualified candidate for that position is General Colin Powell. As most Americans know, General Powell has served our nation honorably and wisely as a four-star Army General, as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as Secretary of State. For a sitting vice president, the natural progression is the ascension to the presidency through his nomination at the Republican National Convention. Most Republicans and Independents would agree that he is the only Republican who has the slightest chance to overcome the overwhelming lead of the Democrats' candidates - either Clinton or Obama. The reality of the present political circus is that without General Powell's presidential candidacy, the Democrats will capture the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives in 2008 and allow a one party rule for the next 12 years (8 years Clinton and 4 years Obama), at least. General Powell is 70 years old now and in good health, however, in 12 years he will be 82 years old, and probably no longer a viable candidate. Moreover, in 12 years of the democrat's politics, the GOP (Gone Old Party) will be as well known then as the Whig Party (whose misinformed politics were also mishandled) is known today.

The MD Victor says the country needs Mr. Powell NOW!
