Enmerkar
by JahSun

Hey, just an addendum.

I went back and looked through some of my books about Sumer, and remembered that the Biblical Nimrod (ruler of Erech, considered the 1st king, and known usually as Nimrod the Hunter) is actually tied linguistically and in terms of plot points to the great Sumerian king Enmerkar. (wiki on Enmerkar)

I include the link to wikipedia not because of their eminent scholarship, but because it is a quick and easy link to show that scholars connect Nimrod to Enmerkar. Kar means hunter in Sumerian. Also, Enmerkar was part of the Sumerian story where they build a tower (ziggurat) and the languages get confused... just like Nimrod. Furthermore, Nimrod was king in a place called Erech which has been shown to be the biblical name of Uruk. As far as Bible historiography goes, this is pretty solid stuff.
