It sounds as though Tom received a lot of peace and balance from his early days in Scientology--particularly given his early loss of his father and driving ambition. Perhaps it is after one is promoted up the hierarchy that the deadly effects of ego set in, you know, "I'm special, a chosen one," and all that. Drives a lot of people over.
