Bear on a Bicycle
by markrampion
What is positive about this particular column for me, is like the bear riding a bicycle, not whether Hitchens does it well, but that he does it at all. There is so much media self-suppression about the current spate of religious quackery that pervades the public sphere, it is refreshing to see an honest reaction printed in the mainstream, even if it does state the obvious somewhat incoherently. I'd really like to see Hichens take on Romney's recent speech on religion where his formulation that freedom requires faith, and faith requires freedom (or was it vice versa?) whipped up the culture war and pandered to proto-fascist religious zealots. Romney is smarter, richer and more of a danger that Gov. Huck will ever be. Go get 'em Chrsistopher, but don't dwell on the quaint particulars of Romney's professed religion, all religions share quaint particulars. What needs to be exposed is the danger that co-opted religious fervor presents to our democracy and to our freedom.
