Proud to be Mormon
by Debater

Wow! This article really hurt my feelings. Politics is one thing and it seems that mudslinging within campaigning is tolerated, however some of the comments made in this article went beyond mudslinging at a cadidate and were more directed at the religion itself.

I don't know what exactly qualifies Mr. Christopher Hitchens as an expert of my religion aside from his access to media outlets, but I can tell you that defining it as a cult (and the negative connotations that accompany that word) is inaccurate. We are not a religion that secretively finds ways to abhor the laws of the land. In fact our Articles of Faith dictate quite the contrary.

I agree that Brother Romney should be more forthcoming about the beliefs of our religion, yet he should not be required to recite all doctrine to everyone, especially not to those who can't appreciate that actions speak louder than words. If you want a valid understanding of my religion look at the actions of the church in world welfare projects or of a member of the church you may know. These are the fruits of the religion, and they fall from a tree that is genuinely a positive influence in my life. I can honestly say that had I not been raised a Mormon my life would be a mess because I would have a much lower standard of morals than I now have.

I guess this article isn't that bad after all because it has made me reflect on how much I have gained from being a member of the Mormon church. That was probably not exactly the intentions of the author but thank you anyways Christopher Hitchens.
