I read this years ago and I cannot remember the source. They claimed that we were wrong to look for a state-by-state correlation but that a highly reported execution depressed the NATIONAL murder rate for the next WEEK.

This fits in with the reasonable notion that murderers are not totally rational. They are not totally irrational either they do refrain from murder when execution is on their mind. They just have very short attention spans.
