Okay, I don't appreciate the implication that only the unintelligent believe in the Law of Attraction. I think the author makes a valid point about the misappropriation of historical and scientific material in The Secret. Also, the film has a certain cheesiness about it. However, while its construction and means of presentation are by no means perfect, in my opinion, its underlying message is entirely valid. In fact, coming to this awareness has led me to heal ailments labeled incurable by fancy-pants, high priced MD's. I sympathize with the author's POV. I remember when I was much younger and lived in a very New Agey locale and thought this stuff was beyond bogus. Then I lived and learned. Anyway, there's a lot of pressure in the culture to think in certain ways and reject certain other ideas. I know several academics educated and teaching at major research universities and/or smaller elite, selective institutions who believe in and utilize these ideas. But would they come clean about this professionally or publicly? Absolutely not. In any case, the notion of responsibility for one's own hardships does NOT imply guilt. Rather, it offers possibility, power and hope. Sure, there are dabblers who never are able to become present enough to experience the benefits of the practices they espouse enthusiastically. Perhaps the author's father was like that. In any case, I wish her and everyone well. Whatever we currently believe, may we all be as kind to ourselves and to one another as humanly (or superhumanly!) possible. Peace out!!!!! Salaam-a-rama! And, most especially, as my good friend and main man Ali G would say: "RESPECT!"
