This is absolutely the most absurd article I have read in Slate, so far. Allow me to summarize what this author is saying...Yes, anyone can paint Modern and Abstract Art, but a real artist thinks about it and knows when to say "Ahaaa, Fin, This Is Art!!". You have got to be friggen kidding me. Based on this logic, the actual process of painting is second, and the thought, intent, and realization is first.

Modern and Abstract art is, what it is. A rich mans NASCAR. You know...how NASCAR fans claim it to be a "Sport"...when really...its just driving real fast in circles....And I like Modern and Abstract art ...I will admit it. But I would sooner hand my kids a canvas and some paint, then purchase some one elses smudges for thousands and thousands of dollars.
