No, I don't think Islamic Fundamentalists are 'equivalent' to conservative Christians; I just think they are similar in the ways I mentioned.

And it's just not true that Christians are never violent. Remember how Christianity was used to justify slavery? Remember how Christianity was used in the 60s to stop the civil rights movement? Remember the Timothy McVeigh types running around with guns violating gun laws and protecting their vision of white America, Bible in one hand, M16 in the other? Remember the guy who shot the doctor who had performed abortions?

I'm NOT biased against Christians. I am a Christian, although not a concervative one. It's distressing when people like me are made to feel we're not really Christians just because we don't vote a straight Republcan ticket in every election we hear about.

Somehow our national discussion will have to get back to a civil point where ideas are exchanged without insults, where general nastiness is seen as polluting the national debate, and where we all recognize that we might have something to learn from one another.
