The most interesting things left by the mound builders are objects demonstrating an extensive trade network that extended from the Arctic north to South America. Because of their position on the Mississippi plain they were essentially in the middle of a trade route analogous to the Silk Road. They were apparently done in by exhausting the soil resulting in failed crops (sort of ironic in the midwestern grain belt.)
For restaurants, a few suggestions: The Rick Bayless projects (Frontera Grill and Topolobampo) offer gourmet Mexican influenced menus at reasonable prices; Bistro Campagne on north Lincoln is a favorite that features local produce and meat suppliers in a casual atmosphere (never had a bad meal there); for a traditional Chicago steak house, it's tough to beat Gene & Georgetti's. Go north to the village of Highwood and there are numerous excellent Italian and French restaurants. I defer to Schmutzie for hot dogs, gyros, cheese burgers, and the like. When the smelt are running, try Phil Schmidt's across the line in Indiana.
