Gunsmoke's post earlier is quite correct. You can buy pistols, rifles, and shotguns at the PX. If you live in family quarters on post, you may keep firearms there. If you live in the barracks, you have to store your privately owned weapons in the unit arms room. You can sign them out when you want to use them. When transporting them on post, they must be unloaded and in the trunk of your car. All weapons must be registered.
But like any rule or regulation, they will not protect you from the person intent on breaking them. The idea of everyone going armed as a security measure is etremely flawed. Of course, if I had been sitting in that building when this went down, I would have been happy to have a pistol in the cargo pocket of my DCU's. I'm just saying.
Carrying a gun is always a bad idea, until of course you actually need one. As a law enforcement officer, I always wanted everyone else to be unarmed, but when I was off duty, I always carried mine. When I retired, the first thing I did was get a carry permit. It's not valid on a military reservation, but other then that, it is simply an insurance policy.
