Why is he so anchored to somebody else's lies? (My guess is that Inky, Savage, etc are finding their humour in Joe Medicine Crow's name .. somehow un-American, maybe?)

Anyway, why so anchored? Another guess: has to do with the level of personal distaste and dislike they have for the man (Obama). It's like, it doesn't matter if he was cracking wise or not, cause it's something that he would do anyway even if he forgot this time.
