Re: Slate as political campaign: the degredation of the news

I couldn't agree more. The Religious Right ... and most other people ... believe that some choices are simply wrong or illegitimate. That's the heart of all criminal justice, for one. It is also at the heart of anti-discrimination laws. I could pull out striking examples of illegitimate choices, but you aren't looking to be convinced. For pro-abortion people, choice is a rhetorical mantra, nothing more. The values that really animate the discussion are perhaps varied - some people dislike humanity as a whole and want a human-free planet, others are simply racist (like the founder of Planned Parenthood), some just don't like poor people or particular ethnic groups, and others think that they are disempowering men despite disproportionately killing unborn women. However, a simple love of 'choice' to do things, right or wrong, is not particularly common; we don't see a massive pro-choice campaign for other violent crimes to be legalized.
