My problem with same sex marriages is that I foresee abuse by corporations when CEO's marry. It might take 30 years, but with billions of dollars at stake, it's going to happen.
My opinion on same sex marriages is
a) The religious aspects of marriages are a religious issue and that should be entirely up to the church you are a member off.
b) The legal aspects that have been historically linked with marriage need to be broken out from marriage. Anyone should be able to see their spouse in the hospital. Anyone should get custody of the children if their spouse dies. But should anyone be able to pass ownership of 75 million dollars worth of stock to their "surviving spouse" without tax consequences? Should anyone be immune to being forced to testify because they are married to someone?
Not all male/female unions have sex, or even live in the same city, so you can't use sex or cohabitation as a basis for a legitmate marriage. Not all male/female marriages are remotely close in age. Imagine the 26 year old CEO "marrying" the 78 year old retiring CEO to gain tax advantages for the corporation.
It may be that some legal rights are different for male/female marriages than for male/male marriages.
It may be that some existing legal rights for male/female pairs need to be restricted (because they could be abused just as easily by male/females-- they just haven't been (too much) so far).
