The person doesn't have enough space/resources to invite everyone she wants to invite +1. Why is that difficult to comprehend? I couldn't have a dinner for more than a few people, and it would be more important me to have all my there than to have half my friends and half a bunch of people I don't really know who aren't really part of the particular crowd that the party is aimed at.
Social convention is that a person's significant other is invited to dinner parties. There are other types of events where one can be exclusionary, such as a girl's night out, etc.

Furthermore, if, at any event, someone is automatically assumed to bring a "plus 1" that should go for everyone, and the plus one should be allowed to be anyone, not just a romantic partner.
And that is not the way social convention works. Rant about it all you want, but I don't think this is ever going to change.

I disagree. It was "social convention" for black people to be relegated to the back of the bus. I don't believe that people should EVER take social convention for granted just by virtue of the fact that it is social convention. You are admitting that there is no other reason for it right here. I realize it's social convention, and I think it's wrong. And I disagree and think that it HAS to change, because as someone mentioned, we don't live in the world of Ozzie and Harriet anymore. These rules don't apply anymore, and only serve to maintain a higher status of one group of people over another.
