Where I work salaried workers sometimes work extra hours but they also can take time off without it affecting their sick leave or vacation. As long as they work 4hrs and 1 minute they can take the rest of the day off with their supervisor's permission. They are also entitled to larger raises, education hours added each year that they can use as vacation and many more extra benefits so listening to them saying they don't get paid for extra hours is laughable.

Hourly employees do get overtime when needed but they also have to account for every minute of the day as everything comes off their vacation or sick leave.
