Why we should never listen to the Chamber of Commerce
by revrick

Gross' analysis, while true, encompasses far too short a time span. We need to go back to the 19th century to get a broad-based historical perspective. And while we are at it, we should throw in the National Association of Manufacturers with the Chamber of Commerce to get a better, 'richer' understanding of where this 'business knows better and our way will lead to prosperity" model would get us.

Let us count the ways of how much business loves us --

  • Opposed child labor laws
  • Opposed the progressive income tax
  • Opposed antitrust laws
  • Opposed the eight-hour day
  • Opposed the minimum wage
  • Opposed Social Security
  • Opposed Medicare
  • Opposed financial regulations such as Glass-Steagel
  • Opposed labor unions
  • Opposed workplace safety laws
  • Opposed environmental laws

They were, however, all in favor of such things as deregulation and tax cuts.

All those things they opposed and all those things they favored were in the name of jobs and prosperity. Funny thing is when we got the things they opposed, we enjoyed the broadest prosperity ever as a nation, and when we got those things they favored, we got massive debt, widening income inequality and our broadest economic collapses.

So, the Obama administration should listen carefully to the CoC and do the exact opposite!
